In 2025, the U.S. government expanded its "reciprocal tariffs" to over 60 countries, with rates ranging from 25% to 200% on select categories such as steel, copper, and pharmaceuticals. According to the latest US-Vietnam trade agreement, Vietnam’s export tariff to the US is 20%. Vietnam tariff adjustment

Recently, the United States and Vietnam reached a new trade agreement, and began to implement a new tariff system: Vietnam will impose a uniform 20% tariff on goods exported to the United States, and an additional 40% tariff on goods suspected of re-export (such as processing by a third country and then re-export). This new policy is significantly lower than the 55% or even higher tax rate on other countries, which greatly reduces cost pressure.

Vietnam was the sixth-largest importer to the U.S. last year, supplying almost $137 billion worth of goods and fuelling a $124 billion trade surplus with the U.S.—the third-largest trade gap with the U.S. after China and Mexico. The country’s share of imports to the U.S. was bolstered during Trump’s first term, when trade tensions with China pushed firms to move production to Southeast Asia.
